Kenya’s Constitution guarantees the right to the highest attainable standard of health, including reproductive health care, and permits access to abortion care. Building on this foundation, Kenya has made measurable progress in expanding access to reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health services. Yet significant gaps remain: maternal mortality stands at 355 per 100,000 live births. The Reproductive Health Policy recognises abortion complications as a major driver of this mortality. Yet women and adolescent girls still face substantial barriers to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services, and unsafe abortion remains a leading cause of maternal death and morbidity. Closing this gap requires investment in safe abortion and post-abortion care, alongside broader health systems strengthening, particularly in underserved communities.
Launched in 2025, the Kaleidoscope Initiative aims to close this gap by strengthening the health system’s capacity to deliver quality, comprehensive reproductive health services, including safe abortion and post-abortion care.
Our work
We work on multiple fronts simultaneously: harmonising policy frameworks at national and county level, building the capacity of health facilities to offer youth-differentiated services, engaging religious and community leaders as strategic allies, and supporting adolescents and young women themselves to become advocates in budget and policy spaces. Strengthening data systems and holding government accountable to its own commitments are equally central to our approach.
Our vision
Six organisations form our Kenya network: TICAH, Ads Nyanza, KMET, SRHR Alliance, RHNK and Zamara Foundation. Our vision is zero maternal deaths from unsafe abortion and 80 percent of adolescent girls and young women in target counties accessing quality, affordable, and age-appropriate reproductive health services.
